Proverbs are formed over time by observation, experience and shared knowledge. Many of them are concise, easy to remember, witty to say, and sharply point to some aspect of the truth. Therefore, it is often used as a substitute for detailed explanations, or as an effective means of making explanations and arguments persuasive or concise.

Although there are parts that overlap with idioms, idioms that are used as part of ordinary sentences are called idioms, and those that take the form of sentences or express meanings that are concise but equivalent to sentences are called proverbs. is normal.

Many researchers have pointed out that the basic structure of proverbs is an even number structure such as ``A is B,'' ``B of A,'' and ``B over A.'' For example, Shinobu Orikuchi paid attention to the difference between poems and proverbs, that poems are in odd-numbered rhythm and proverbs are in even-numbered rhythm. In addition, Yasaburo Ikeda focused on the fact that haiku and senryu are shortened to even numbers and transformed into proverbs, and explained the difference between literary arts and proverbs.

Proverbs with an even number structure have two things in common. First, by presenting two things in contrast, they function as rhetoric that makes them stand out from each other, and they look at things dialectically. The other is that proverbs, which are extremely truncated expressions, omit even the underlying logic.

Alan Dundas said that a proverb must have at least one topic and one comment to function as a proverb. For example, in the case of 'Konya no Shirahakama,' the subject is the Konya and the white hakama is the description. Proverbs in one-word sentences cannot be logically established, because a proposition must consist of a set of themes and statements.
