Nagoya dialect is a Japanese dialect spoken in the western part of Aichi Prefecture (Owari Province) in Japan. It belongs to the Gifu/Aichi dialect (Gia dialect) group of the Tokai Higashiyama dialect, like the Mino dialect of Gifu prefecture.
In a narrow sense, it refers to the dialect spoken in the center of Nagoya City, but in a broader sense it includes the Owari dialect and Chita dialect spoken in the surrounding areas. In this section, we mainly deal with the Owari dialect in the broad sense of the Nagoya dialect.
Even in Aichi Prefecture, the dialect spoken in the eastern part (former Mikawa Province or former Nukata Prefecture) is the Mikawa dialect, and there are many differences in accent and expression from the Nagoya dialect. On the other hand, the Nagoya dialect has a lot in common with the Mino dialect of Gifu prefecture.
The Nagoya dialect has a history similar to that of the Tokyo dialect, in that it was established during the Edo period as a mixture of the dialects of residents who came from all over the country in the emerging cities of Nagoya and Edo. The basis of grammar is the same as common language, and general grammatical terms and classifications for common language can be applied as they are, so they are also applied in this section.
The accent is classified as an inner circle Tokyo style, but the grammar has many Kansai elements. The grammar of the common language is also Kansai-like compared to the West Kanto dialect native to the Tokyo suburbs, but that of the Nagoya dialect is somewhat more Kansai-like. The dialect of Aichi Prefecture is in the boundary zone between the dialects of West Japan and the dialect of East Japan, and has the characteristics of West Japan in grammar and East Japan in terms of phonology and accent.
Introduction
As a characteristic of the pronunciation of the Nagoya dialect, a series of vowels such as "ai" or "ae" in common language (continuous vowels) extend the vowels that fall between a and e (open vowels with unrounded front tongue narrowing). er" (International Phonetic Alphabet: [æː]). This is a long vowel sound that is a long extension of the vowels ([æ]) of the English "can" and "cat", and is a sound that is not found in common languages. For example, "nai" is often written as "nyaa" or "nyaa" ([ɳjaː]), but it is actually a different sound from the contracted sound in common Japanese. For example, in the sentence ``Neko ganyaato nyaata'' (neko ganyaato nyaata), the first and second ``nyaa'' are different sounds even though they have the same notation. The former is the same as the common word ``nyah'' ([ɳjaː]), and the latter is ``nea'' ([næː]), which is between ``nee'' and ``na''. In this section, in order to distinguish between the two, the latter sound is written as ``edan no kana +a''. In other words, the previous example is written as ``Nekoganyaatoneata''.
