In historical review, Islamic education began when the Prophet Muhammad SAW was sent as an Apostle. The first education imparted by Rasulullah SAW was moral education, namely teaching Islamic values ​​in Umar's life at that time. After the first milestone in education was laid by the Prophet, the dynamics of Islamic education continued to be very progressive, especially during the classical period in the first three periods (around 650 - 1000 AD), namely during the heyday of Islam. The dynamics of Islamic education continued to develop until modern times, precisely at the end of the nineteenth century and increasingly developed in the period thereafter. The dynamics of the development of Islamic education are also followed by the development of Islamic educational institutions or institutions.

Institutionally, Islamic education has experienced fluctuating changes from the first period to the present, as has happened in Indonesia. The institutions and methodologies applied are adapted to developments over time, so that the institutionalization of Islamic education also experiences developments from the classical period to the modern period. Apart from general institutions such as mosques, there are also other institutions which have characteristics that are oriented as embryonic Islamic educational institutions, such as mosques (mosques equipped with dormitories and accommodation) and madrasas.

Mosques in the context of the history of Islamic education, are not mosques that only function as a place of prayer for the general public, known as jami' mosques. The mosque referred to as a place of education is a mosque that functions in addition to being a place of prayer, but also as a place of education (majlis ta'lim).

The development of mosques as places of education was supported by rulers such as Adud al-Daulah (d. 965), Al-Sahib Ibn 'Abbad (d. 995) and Di'lil al-Sijistani (d. 965) who were later known as pioneers in the development of mosques. education (majlis ta'lim).

A khan mosque is a mosque equipped with a khan building (dormitory and accommodation) attached to the mosque. Dormitories are provided as accommodation for students who come from various cities. This period experienced quite rapid development in the 10th century, marked by the founding of 3,000 khan mosques under the rule of Add al-Daulah (d. 965). Meanwhile, madrasas are educational institutions consisting of study rooms, boarding houses and mosques. According to Makdisi, Badr bin Hasanawaih al Kurdi (d. 1015), the development of madrasas was pioneered by Nizam al Mulk (d. 1063).

In the Indonesian context, Islamic education began to develop since Islam entered Indonesia through Gujarat. The first Islamic educational institution in Indonesia that combined with the uniqueness and uniqueness of Indonesian culture was in the form of an Islamic boarding school institution.
