What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy, comes from the Greek (Epilepsia) which means 'attack'. Please note, epilepsy is not contagious, is not a hereditary disease, and is not synonymous with people who are mentally retarded. In fact, many epilepsy sufferers suffer from epilepsy without knowing the cause.

- MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) Uses a very strong magnet to get images inside a person's brain. Does not use X-Ray. MRI is more sensitive than CT-Scan.

- EEG (electroencephalography) is a tool to check brain waves.

Conventional Treatment:

The following are the names of drugs used to treat epilepsy conventionally. All medications must be consulted with a doctor first.

Carbamazepine, Carbatrol, Clobazam, Clonazepam, Depakene, Depakote, Depakote ER, Diastat, Dilantin, Felbatol, Frisium, Gabapentin, Gabitril, Keppra, Klonopin, Lamictal, Lyrica, Mysoline, Neurontin, Phenobarbital, Phenytek, Phenytoin, Sabril, Tegretol, Tegretol XR, Topamax, Trileptal, Valproic Acid, Zarontin, Zonegran, Zonisamide.

Apart from the chemical drugs above, epilepsy can also be cured with the Ketogenic Diet and other alternative treatments.
