The noblest and highest level of philosophy is First Philosophy, namely, knowledge of the First Truth which is the cause of all truth. Therefore, the perfect and most noble philosopher must be someone who truly understands this great knowledge; because knowledge of causes is nobler than knowledge of effects, because our knowledge is complete of everything there is to know only when we have complete knowledge of the causes.

Every cause is always between matter (substance) or form or agent, that is, from which motion begins; or end, that is, something like that. There are four scientific questions, as we have decided elsewhere in our philosophical treatises; between “whether”, “what”, “which” or “why”.

“Is” is an inquiry into the existence of (something); “what” traces the genus of every existence that has a genus; “which” explores the specific differences; “what” and “which” both investigate species; and “why” is the final cause, because it is a search for absolute causes.

It is proven that when we gain comprehensive knowledge of matter (substance) we thereby gain comprehensive knowledge of the genus; and when we have complete knowledge of form we thus gain complete knowledge of species, knowledge of specific differences being included in the knowledge of species.

Therefore, when we gain a thorough knowledge of matter, its form and first causes, we thereby gain a comprehensive knowledge of the definition and basic nature of every object recognized in its definition.

The knowledge of the true first cause is called "First Philosophy", because all the other parts of philosophy are contained in that knowledge. Hence the first cause is first in glory, first in genus, first in degree of appreciation of the most certain knowledge; and the earliest, because it is the cause of time.
