Dewi Kwan Im is a Goddess of Mercy who is popularly adored by the Chinese community and overseas in the world. The term 'Kwan Im' itself originates from the Hokkien dialect which is commonly used by the majority of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia.

Dewi Kwan Im was first introduced to China in the first century BC, along with the entry of Buddhism. In the 7th century, Kwan Im became known in Korea and Japan because of the influence of the Tang Dynasty. At the same time, Tibet also came to know Kwan Im and called it Chenrezig. The Dalai Lama is often regarded as the reincarnation of Kwan Im in the world.

Many stories about the origin of the Goddess Kwan Im in Chinese society. One of the most famous is the story of the Legend of Princess Miao Shan. According to the story, Princess Miao Shan was born during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770-256 BC), who was the son of King Miao Zhuang (??) ruler of the State of Xing Lin at the end of the Zhou Dynasty (3rd century BC).

In the belief of Buddhism that is growing rapidly in China, it is believed that all requests that depart from sincerity and holy intentions, then usually the Goddess Kwan Im will grant that request. Especially at critical times where someone is faced with danger. So that in thousands of years, the moral devotion of Dewi Kwan Im is known as the galib pivots four paths of truth. Goddess Kwan Im as a Bodhisattva who symbolizes compassion and compassion has 20 Teachings of Compassion which is a role model for Buddhists, while in Maha Karuna Dharani (Ta Pei Co.) there are 84 manifestations of Kwan Im Pho Sat as a symbol of Bodhisattva who has great authority. .
