nnbArt carving in Indonesia experienced the development of traditional carving into modern sculpture. In traditional sculpture the making is based on philosophical values that are closely related to local culture as well as religion or beliefs held by the community in which the art of carving is made. In contrast to traditional carving, modern sculpture carries forward the aesthetic and beauty issues of a work of art, although traditional philosophy can still color their work.

The existence of sculpture has existed since a long time since prehistoric times or in the stone age of young. In those days people were familiar with tools for household use and objects made of wood and earthenware.

Carving is the art of chipping and cutting on a flat piece of wood to make the engraving seem to be three dimensional. This technique is usually done using aids such as chisels and hammers, carving knives though often used to clarify details. In relief carvings, woodcarving artisans make drawings first then start carving the wood until it appears the part that arises like a relief.
