About Water Head Loss

A practical process engineering solution.

A practical process engineering solution for pipe sizing and pipe friction losses calculation for water, including valves and fittings (minor) losses. Features included:

- Internal and external diameters of the common commercial steel pipes for different schedules (thickness)

- Physical properties of water at given temperatures (density and viscosity)

- Calculations in two different systems of units – Metric and English (Imperial) – with usual units for piping calculations

Friction factor is calculated using the Colebrook-White formulae:

1/√f=-2*log⁡((ε/D)/3.72+2.51/(Re*√f))

For laminar flow (Re<2000):

f=64/Re

Distributed head losses:

h_l=f*L/D*v^2/(2*g)
