On the Hönggerberg, an open-air laboratory with historical, current and future forms of forest management is being built on an area of ​​1.5 square kilometers. The services of the forest for people are also discussed: e.g. the cooling capacity, the storage of greenhouse gas or forest bathing. The forest laboratory has a time horizon of 100 years.

The forest laboratory is a place of learning, experience and research at the same time. This creates an outdoor classroom for students, an adventurous forest for families, and a research location for professionals.

Despite the use of the forest as a forest laboratory, the function as a recreational area is preserved.
