The Umayyad Empire, also known as the Umayyad Caliphate, was a significant Islamic state that existed from 661 to 750 CE. It emerged after the assassination of the fourth caliph, Ali, which marked the end of the Rashidun Caliphate. The Umayyads were members of the Umayya clan, a powerful tribe in Mecca, and they established their capital in Damascus, Syria.
