Historical Background

Muharam is the first month in the Islamic calendar, where Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husain As, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Husain was born on the 3rd of Shaban, in the fourth Hijri year (625 AD). His grandfather, Muhammad peace be upon him, gave him the name Husain, which means "one who behaves well".

The Qur'an describes the Prophet Muhammad, his daughters Fatima and Ali (Fatimah's husband), and their two children, Hasan and Husain, in the verse: "Verily Allah intends to remove sin from you O Ahlul Bayt and purify you as pure as possible" ( Surah al-Ahzab: 33). The Prophet conveyed on many occasions that those who come from his lineage have the qualities of a leader. When he was with Hasan and Husayn, Rasulullah saw said, "These two children are my sons. They are two Imams (leaders)."

Throughout the life of the Prophet Muhammad, his family and relatives, led by Abu Sufyan in Mecca, tried to stop the preaching of the Prophet Muhammad in every way they could. They tried to kill the Prophet, but failed. Then, after the death of the Prophet Muhammad, Abu Sufyan's son, Muawiyah, claimed to be the leader of the Muslims. Ali, as the Prophet's cousin and son-in-law, who was supposed to become the leader of the Muslims after the Prophet's death, began to defend Islam against Muawiyah, who formed an alliance with the Byzantine empire. And the war started from the capital city of Damascus.

Although Ali opposed Muawiyah to resolve their disputes one on one, not with the army, Muawiyah always refused. Not too long ago, Ali was killed while praying in the Kufa mosque.
