Reggae is a musical genre originally developed in Jamaica in the late '60s. Although often used extensively to name almost all types of Jamaican music, the term reggae more precisely refers to a particular style of music that appears to follow the development of ska and rocksteady.

Reggae is based on a rhythmic style characterized by an off-beat accent or syncope, called a skank. In general reggae has a slower tempo than ska or rocksteady.
