Biography of Al-Hallaj:

His full name is Abu al-Mughits al-Husein bin Mansur bin Muhammad al-Baidawi. He was born in 244 AH (858 AD) in the Thur part of the Baida district of Persia, a place of Arabized southern Iran that was a sub camp of the Basrah jund, and later a military center (with a factory making coins for the outgoing troops from Shiraz to Khurasan to fight the Turks), now in the Southwestern region of Iran. He grew up in Wasit and Tustar which were known as cotton plantations and where cotton sorters lived. His father was a wool sorter (hallaj), therefore he was given the title al-Hallaj. Together with his father, al-Hallaj immigrated to a textile center in Ahwaz and Tustar. His grandfather, Muhammad, was a fire worshiper, a follower of the Magi religion before he converted to Islam. Some say that al Hallaj came from the descendants of Abu Ayyub, a friend of the Prophet.
