Tapirs ( Tapirus ) are herbivorous animals from a group of odd toed ungulates superfamily tapiroobraznye somewhat resembling a pig but unlike it possesses a short suited trunk.

The sizes of tapirs differ from species to species but as a rule the length of the tapir is about two meters the tail is 7-13 cm the height at the withers is about a meter and the weight is from 110 to 300 kg. Life expectancy at will is about 30 years the cub is born always alone the pregnancy lasts about 13 months. Newborn tapirs have a protective coloration consisting of spots and bands and although this color seems to be the same there are some differences between different species. The front legs of the tapirs are four-toed and the hind legs are three-toed with small hooves on their fingers helping to move along dirty and soft ground.

The upper lip of the tapir together with its elongated nose forms a small but very mobile proboscis ending in a patch surrounded by short sensitive vibrating hairs.
