The Tamil people, also known as Tamilar (Tamil: தமிழர், romanized: Tamiḻar, pronounced in the singular or தமிழர்கள், Tamiḻarkaḷ, in the plural), Tamilians, or simply Tamils (), are a Dravidian ethno-linguistic group who natively speak Tamil and trace their ancestry mainly to India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, the union territory of Puducherry, and to Sri Lanka. The Tamil language is one of the world's longest-surviving classical languages, with over 2000 years of Tamil literature, including the Sangam poems, which were composed between 300 BCE and 300 CE.

Tamils constitute 5.9% of the population in India (concentrated mainly in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry), 15% in Sri Lanka (excluding Sri Lankan Moors), 7% in Malaysia, and 5% in Singapore.

From the 4th century BC, urbanisation and mercantile activity along the western and eastern coasts of Tamilakam what is today Kerala and Tamil Nadu led to the development of four large Tamil empires, the Cheras, Cholas, Pandyas, and Pallavas and a number of smaller states, all of whom were warring amongst themselves for dominance. The Jaffna Kingdom, inhabited by Eelam Tamils, was once one of the strongest kingdoms of Sri Lanka and controlled much of the north of the island.

Tamils were noted for their influence on regional trade throughout the Indian Ocean. Artefacts marking the presence of Roman traders demonstrate that direct trade was active between Ancient Rome and Southern India, and the Pandyas were recorded as having sent at least two embassies directly to the Roman Emperor Augustus in Rome. The Pandyas and Cholas were historically active in Sri Lanka. The Chola dynasty successfully invaded several areas in southeast Asia, including the powerful Srivijaya and the city-state of Kedah. Medieval Tamil guilds and trading organizations like the Ayyavole and Manigramam played an important role in Southeast Asian trading networks. Pallava traders and religious leaders travelled to Southeast Asia and played an important role in the cultural Indianisation of the region. Scripts brought by Tamil traders to Southeast Asia, like the Grantha and Pallava scripts, induced the development of many Southeast Asian scripts such as Khmer, Javanese, Kawi, Baybayin, and Thai.

தமிழர் (ஆங்கில மொழி: Tamil, Tamils, Tamilians) என்பவர் தமிழைத் தாய்மொழியாகக் கொண்டவர்களாவர். மிகப் பழைய தமிழ்ச் சமுதாயங்கள் தென்னிந்தியா, இலங்கையைச் சேர்ந்தவைகள் ஆகும். உலகம் முழுவதிலும் இன்று தமிழர் பரவி வாழ்ந்தாலும் அவர்களது தாயகம் தமிழ்நாடும், தமிழீழமுமே ஆகும். 1800 முதல் 1900-களில் பிரித்தானியக் குடியேற்றவாத அரசால் பெருந்தோட்டப் பயிர்ச் செய்கைக்காகத் தென்னிந்தியாவிலிருந்தும், இலங்கையின் வடபகுதியிலிருந்தும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க அளவில் தமிழர்கள் மலேசியா, சிங்கப்பூர், பர்மா போன்ற நாடுகளில் குடியேற்றப்பட்டார்கள், மேலும் மொரிசியசு, மடகாசுகர், தென்னாபிரிக்கா போன்ற ஆப்பிரிக்கா நாடுகள் பலவற்றிலும் தமிழர்கள் குடியேறியுள்ளார்கள். 20-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் தொழில் வாய்ப்புகள் பெற்று நடு ஆசிய நாடுகளுக்குச் சென்று வசிக்கின்றனர். 1950-ஆம் ஆண்டுக்குப் பின்னர்த் தமிழர் தொழில் வல்லுநர்களாக ஐரோப்பிய அமெரிக்க நாடுகளுக்குப் புலம்பெயர்ந்தனர். 1983-ஆம் ஆண்டு இலங்கை உள்நாட்டு இனக்கலவரங்களில் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெருமளவு ஈழத்தமிழர்கள் ஆத்திரேலியா, கனடா, அமெரிக்கா போன்ற நாடுகளிலும், ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகளான பிரித்தானியா, பிரான்சு, செருமனி, சுவிட்சர்லாந்து, தென்மார்க்கு, நோர்வே ஆகிய நாடுகளிலும் சென்று வாழ்கிறார்கள். உலகில் 70 மில்லியன் மக்கள் தமிழைத் தாய் மொழியாகவும், மேலும் 9 மில்லியன் மக்கள் தமிழை இரண்டாம் மொழியாகக் கொண்டுள்ளனர்.
