The Gastroenterology division in Govt Stanley Hospital made a budding beginning in early 1980 with a single faculty from Medicine dept. with fringe support from other members of General medicine. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Tamil Nadu started Gastroenterology Department in 1989 to provide comprehensive medical care, train postgraduates and conduct research in the field relevant to country need. The DM course in Medical Gastroenterology was started in 1995.
