Whether you embrace Valentine’s Day or boycott it with a girls’ night out, this sweet, neutral arrangement is not only easy to make but can also be displayed year-round. Whether you’re looking for a simple yet elegant wedding centerpiece or a lovely decoration for a mantel or shelf, this project can adapt to fill different sizes of horizontal space. Things You’ll Need White silk or real flowers, such as hydrangeas 4 tin pails or terracotta pots White spray paint Letter stencils or printout of the word LOVE Scissors Soft graphite pencil Tape Black permanent marker or black acrylic paint and a fine-tip round paintbrush Small jars of water (for fresh flowers), soil (for plants) or floral foam (for silk flowers) Start by spray-painting the tin pails white. When the pails are dry (after at least an hour), move on to the lettering. You could paint the letters on the pails with stencils, but I find the transfer method works fine for smaller projects such as this one. It also provides you with the flexibility of using any font you like. Choose a desired font type/size, and print each letter out a separate piece of paper. Cut off the excess paper around each letter so it will fit onto a pail. Tip: Printing the letters onto lined paper helps guide their placement onto the pails. A font size between 200 and 400 stands out well. Flip the paper over. With a dark lead pencil, outline the back of each letter. You want to create a thick, dark layer of graphite on the outline of each letter, as this will transfer the letter shapes onto the pails. Turn the letter templates back over to their front side, and place each letter onto a pail. Secure with tape. Firmly draw around the outline of each letter with a pencil. Remove the paper from each pail, and you should have a light but visible outline of the letter on the white face. Fill in each letter with a black permanent marker or… use a fine-tipped round paintbrush and black acrylic paint to fill the letters in. Allow the ink or paint to dry for at least an hour. For this particular arrangement, I filled four small jars with water and fresh-cut flowers, and placed them inside the tin pails. Another option would be to fill the pails with potting soil and plant some live plants. You could also fill them with chocolate for your guests or simply display them as-is.
