Ibnu Watiniyah said in the book Complete Collection of Lyrics for the Prophet's Sholawat, in linguistic terms sholawat means prayer, giving blessings, and worship. Meanwhile, in terms of terms, prayer is an expression of praise, admiration, as well as a request from a servant to Allah to glorify the Prophet Muhammad SAW. He further explained that prayer is a form of recognition of apostolate as well as love for Rasulullah SAW.

In this case, prayer is not only performed by humans, but Allah SWT and the angels also pray to the Prophet Muhammad SAW. As He says in surah Al Ahzab verse 56: "Indeed, Allah and His angels pray for the Prophet. O you who believe! Pray for the Prophet and greet him with full respect."(QS. Al Ahzab : 56)

Sholawat of the Prophet is divided into two types, namely sholawat ma'tsurah and ghairu ma'tsurah.Sholawat Ma'tsurah is a prayer whose sentences, reading time and priority were created by Rasulullah SAW. Here's an example: "Allahumma shalli alaa Muhammadinin nabiyyil ummiyyi wa'alaa aalihii wa sallim." (O Allah, bestow mercy and greetings on Muhammad, the ummi prophet)
