The prayer honors God in the form of Savitar (or Savitr), who is given the epithets "Divine One", "Gentle Leader", "The Holy", "Golden-Handed", and "Many-Rayed One." Rather than the popular villain from the Flash series, the ancient Vedic Savitar was a form of the kind and benevolent Sun God, Surya. What is the Rig Veda?

The Rig Veda, an ancient Indian collection of 1,028 Vedic Sanskrit hymns, is the first of the four Vedas, the sacred Scripture of ancient Vedic Hinduism. Most of the Rig Veda dates from c. 1500 BCE - 1000 BCE, making it one of the oldest texts of any Indo-European language, and one of the world's oldest religious texts.
