St. Mark's Basilica is a cathedral located in St. Mark's Square, one of the most famous church buildings in the city as one of the best-known examples of Byzantine architectural art. St. Mark's Basilica is adjacent to and connected to the Duca's Palace. Originally St. Mark's Basilica was the chapel of the Venetian duchies and not the city's cathedral. Since 1807 it has been the residence of the Patriarch of Venice and the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Venice.

For the opulent design of St. Mark's Basilica, Byzantine mosaics were gilded as a symbol of Venetian wealth and power. It has been familiar since the 11th century for the golden church with the nickname St. Mark's Basilica.

St. Mark's Basilica was first a temporary structure in the Doge's Palace when it was built in 828 when Venetian merchants stole the relics of St. Mark the Evangelist from Alexandria. The new church burned down in the revolt of 976, was rebuilt in 978, and since 1063 work has been repeated in accordance with the main form of the Basilica today.

St. Mark's Basilica was consecrated in 1094, the same year supposedly the body of St. Mark's was discovered in a column by Vitale Falier, Duke of Venice. Mark's Basilica also joins a lower tower (now St Mark's treasury), believed by some to be an original part of the Duca's Palace.

The church entrance (or lobby area) and the façade of St. Mark's Basilica were built in the first quasi of the 13th century, most of the mosaics were completed, and the domes were covered with higher wood, to match the Duca's Palace rebuilt in the Gothic architectural style which was covered with lead.

In addition, St. Mark's Basilica appears in the game Assassin's Creed II, which was released in November 2009, in the same way.
