Praying the Novena to Mary who unties the knots means entrusting all the knots of our life to our Heavenly Mother. But what are knots? With the word "knots" we mean all those conflicts present in our life, all those problems that, very often, we have been carrying around for years and that we do not know how to solve; all those sins that bind us and prevent us from welcoming God into our life and throwing ourselves into his arms like children; all those resentments that make it difficult to love each other humbly and sincerely within our families; all those knots that suffocate our soul, that tear us down, that take away the joy from the heart and also the will to continue living.

The Virgin Mary takes charge of all these knots by untying them one after the other. "Everyone," the then Cardinal Bergoglio explained on several occasions, "we have knots in our hearts, shortcomings, we are going through difficulties. Our good Father, who distributes grace to all his children, wants us to trust her, to entrust to her the knots of our evils, the tangles of our miseries that prevent us from uniting ourselves with God, so that she will untie them and you bring us closer to her son Jesus. This is the meaning of the image of Mary "untying the knots".

History. In 1986 Pope Francis, then a simple Jesuit priest, was in Germany for his doctoral thesis. During one of his many study trips to Ingolstadt, he saw the image of the Virgin untying the knots in the church of Sankt Peter and fell in love with it instantly. He was so impressed that he brought some reproductions to Buenos Aires that he began to distribute it to priests and faithful, meeting great response. One of the images was exhibited at the University of El Salvador. And it is precisely from here that the spread of the new devotion began.
