Road; a long strip of hard surface used in transportation. It may be formed by natural causes or man-made. It helps human, animal, and vehicle traffic to move quickly, easily, and safely. Roads vary greatly, from footpaths created by footprints on rough terrain to multi-lane highways.

The first roads in history were self-made paths on routes used by animals. Over time, these roads began to be used by people. Roads formed this way and dating back to 6000 B.C. are found around the springs near Jericho. The paved streets of Ur in modern-day Iraq and the timber-paved roads in the present-day English town of Glastonbury date to around 4000 BC and are among the earliest examples of road construction.

Emperor Augustus created the first political road network in history, which he called the "Cursus Publicus," to transport messages, officials, and tax revenues between the provinces and Italy. Service in the Eastern Empire was still in the whole operation during the first half of the sixth century, when the historian Procopius accused Emperor Justinian of dismantling most of the sections, except for the road to the Persian border. The extent of the Cursus Publicus is the Tabula, a map of the Roman road network from 400 A.D. was shown on Peutingeriana.
