Fine-scale biological recording of individual species

Pulsatilla is a lightweight app designed to make it as easy as possible to record the population sizes and extents of individual species in detail and in three dimensions.

It uses your Android device’s GPS to geolocate the individuals as you count them, in 10‑m squares on the British, Irish and Channel Islands mapping grids, together with the altitude above sea level, and automatically assigns them to the appropriate vice-counties.

Already-recorded squares are coloured on the map display, with records of your current species highlighted, so you can see where you’ve been even if you’re recording more than one species at a given site.

The display can be either static, with a compass needle pointing north, or rotate to match the landscape around you. Tap the compass bearing at the top-left to switch.

The green circle shows your current location, and its size represents the uncertainty in the GPS readings. The accuracy and coordinates are also shown at the bottom-right.

All the records you make can be easily exported to a file that can be imported directly into MapMate.
