The novel talks about Percy Jackson as a good kid, but he doesn't seem to focus on his homework or control his temper. And more recently, the period away from boarding school has only gotten worse - Percy could swear that his pre-algebra teacher had turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy's mother finds out, she knows it's time for him to really know where he's coming from, and to go to the only place he'll be safe. She sends Percy to Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he didn't know was Poseidon, the god of the sea. The mystery soon unfolds, and with his friends - one cynical, the other the daughter of the demigod of Athena - Percy sets out on a mission across the United States to reach the gates of the underworld and prevent a disastrous war between the gods.
