The Kremlin, which means castle, is a set of fortified structures located in the center of most historic Russian cities. The most well-known is the Moscow Kremlin.

The Kremlin Palace in Moscow was the residence of the Russian tsars before the revolution. Spas Na Boru (Savior in the Forest) Church is the oldest of the structures lying on an area of 28 hectares on Borovitskiy Cape, 40 m above the Moscow River, and 20 m high and 2 km in circumference.

In the 15th century, a new Italian architectural palace was built to replace the first Kremlin. In 1487, Bekleşhev Tower, Borovitskaya Tower, St. Nicholas, and St. Flor gates were added in 1490. During the reign of Ivan III, several more cathedrals were built. Religious buildings have Byzantine influence, and other structures have an Italian influence. German, English, and Dutch architects carried out the changes made after 1527. The construction of the Bell Tower of Ivan the Great, one of the important structures of the Moscow Kremlin, was started in 1505 and completed in 1600. In the tower is the Tsar Kolokol (Tsar of the Bells), the largest bell in the world, weighing 218 tons. Between 1838 and 1849, the Bolshoi Kremlyovskiy Dvoryets (Great Palace) was built. The Kremlin Theater was built in 1932-1934, and the Palace of Congresses in 1961.

The Moscow Kremlin is the name of a private complex located in the center of Moscow, the construction of which was completed in 1495. The complex is the official residence of the Russian president. The name means "a castle within the city." During the Soviet Union, it was used to host high-ranking officials such as general secretaries, prime ministers, presidents, ministers, and commissioners. It was declared a World Heritage Site together with Red Square in 1990.

The Moscow River lies south of the Kremlin, east of St. Basil's Cathedral and Red Square, and west of the Alexander Garden. It is also located in the same complex as the Grand Kremlin Palace.
