Monteiro Lobato was a well-known journalist, regularly contributing to well-known Newspapers and magazines. In particular, in 1922, he sharply criticized the past in Rio de Janeiro Week of modern art (port. Semana da Arte Moderna), which became a key event for Brazil's accession to the modern art trends. In 1919 he acquired Revista do Brasil, one of the first Brazilian literary and artistic magazines, and in 1920 he founded his own publishing house. He later participated in the founding of two major Brazilian publishers, Companhia Nacional and Editora Brasiliense.

Politically, Lobato was a supporter of a state monopoly on mining and oil industry. For his liberal views, he was arrested during the reign of Getulio Vargas in 1941. Monteiro Lobato died in são Paulo in 1948. Buried in the cemetery of Consolação in são Paulo.
