Moai is in the Pacific Ocean, 3703 km from Chile. It is the name given to the huge statues of solid stone found on Easter Island in the west. The Moai form the pagan ceremonial sites that are also seen in other parts of Polynesia.

The first European to set foot on the island, the German navigator and explorer Carl Friedrich Behrens discovered the Moai statues and temples in 1722. The German missionary and linguist Sebastian Englert, who went to the island in 1935, recorded 638 statues by classifying them according to their type and size. The Easter Island Statue Project, with its original English name, recorded 887 statues during its research between 1969 and 1976. It is estimated that there are more than 1000 Moai statues in total. Although the exact age of the Moai statues is not yet known, there is no doubt that they are not older than 1500 years.

The tallest Moai is called Paro and has a length of about 10 meters and a weight of 82 tons. The heaviest Moai is 86 tons and is incomplete. It is estimated that if completed it would have been 21 meters long and weighed 270 tons. The religious meaning of the Moai statues is not known exactly, and it is thought that they represent ancestors believed to have lived in skeleton form. The male figures are called "Moai Kavakava" and the female figures are called "Moai Pæpæ". Moai are sometimes used in fertility ceremonies, but often in harvest celebrations. The first harvested products were piled up around them.
