It is a series of personal writings written by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, between 161 and 180 AD, in which he recorded his private observations of himself and thoughts on Stoic philosophy.

Marcus Aurelius wrote the Twelve Books, in mixed vernacular Greek, as a source for self-direction and self-improvement. It is probable that he wrote large portions of the work in Sirmium, as he spent much of his time planning the military campaigns during the years 170 to 180 AD. He wrote some of them while he was stationed at Aquincum in his campaign against Pannonia, for the internal memoirs tell us that he wrote them when he was conducting a campaign against a tribe on the river Granova (modern-day Aaron) and wrote the second book in Carnuntum.

It is unlikely that Marcus Aurelius wanted to publish the work and did not give it a title, and thus the Meditations is one of several titles assigned to the collection. These writings take the form of quotations varying in length from a single sentence to long paragraphs.
