The word "chālīsā" is derived from "chālīs", which means the number forty in Hindi, as the Chalisa has 40 verses. Therefore, Chalisa means "forty verse" prayer. They are recited over and over again or chanted by groups. Each god has different Chalisa. Chalisa is considered best method of propitiating your Ishta devta in modern age.
