Kumkum bhagya story begins with the story of a mother of Punjabi named Sarla Arora, who is trying hard to match her oldest child Pragya but always fails because her candidates ultimately prefer Bulbul her youngest child. Pragya, eldest daughter, more practical, hard work, teaching in a college. Bulbul, a stubborn little sister, but very affectionate to her brother, working in Purab company. Initially, the series follows a love triangle between Pragya, Bulbul and Suresh, where Pragya loves Suresh, while Suresh loves the Bulbul. Pragya and Suresh are planning to get married then void after Pragya finds out Suresh loves his sister.

On the other hand, Abhi is a rock star and has a friend named Purab. Purab is the top Bulbul, initially they dislike each other but in the end they both fall in love. But Abhi has paired Purab with his sister Aliya. Aliya thinks Purab wants to cancel her marriage because she loves Pragya. In order to get Purab, Aliya asks his brother Abhi, married Pragya.
