IN A period of more than two decades (1808-1830) the old Javanese order was destroyed and a new colonial government was established - an event that pushed the twin forces of identity, Islam and Javanese nationality, into a bitter conflict with the wave of imperialism brought by the Dutch East Indies government. Known as the Java War (1825-1830), the feud ended with Diponegoro's defeat and exile. After the war, a new era was born in the archipelago, the colonial era, which lasted until the Japanese military occupation (1942-1945).

Prince Diponegoro (1785-1855), a mystic, devout Muslim, and leader of the holy war against the Dutch between 1825 and 1830, is a famous national hero in Indonesian history. However, so far there has been no complete biography of the Prince's life which uses Dutch and Javanese sources to describe his personal life. The Power of Prediction: Prince Diponegoro and the End of the Old Order in Java, 1785-1855 is the first book to use Dutch and British colonial chronicles and archives as the backbone.

This book, which was compiled over a period of around 30 years, tells the story of Diponegoro's life against the backdrop of the upheavals of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when the new European imperialist forces hit the archipelago like an Asian tsunami. In a coherent and detailed way, the author reveals the secrets of this enigmatic and charismatic historical figure: a figure who admitted his weakness as a fan of women, but was also brave and outspoken in facing colonial atrocities - a pioneer of independence who was full of paradoxes.
