The Law of Answering Invitations

1. Mandatory

Answering the invitation of walimah has actually been punished by most scholars, namely Jumhur; that the law is mandatory. This means that a Muslim who is invited to attend a wedding walimah, must come; because it's an obligation.

Because this is legally obligatory; then it is sinful for him who does not attend the walimah without an excuse justified by the Shari'a. And of course also that attending the walimah will be rewarded for those who come. Because indeed the consequence of this obligation is that the perpetrator gets a reward and those who leave without cause get a sin.

This is the opinion agreed upon by the majority of scholars; namely the schools of al-Malikiyah, al-Syafi'iyyah and also al-Hanabilah in the matter of answering walimah wedding invitations.

There are several hadiths that support this opinion, including:

If you are invited to walimah, then answer! (HR. Muslim).

2. Sunnah

A different opinion from the jumhur ulama emerged from al-Hanafiyah scholars. They say that attending a walimah wedding invitation is not a necessity or an obligation but a sunnah.

In another sense, answering and attending the walimah invitation is indeed rewarding, but if you don't attend, it doesn't incur a sin; because it's not an obligation. It's fine to come, it's okay not to come.
