KlankKr8 is a serious game that helps students to learn letters, sounds and especially the links between them. The connections must be strong enough to enable the step towards fluent reading.

KlankKr8 is intended for: 1) preschoolers who are preparing for reading; 2) novice readers; 3) newcomers; and 4) children who can use a helping hand in their reading development. Children with dyslexia also seem to benefit greatly from playing this game.

KlankKr8 is innovative because the game takes a thorough approach to learning sound-sign links. While playing, children are given an explanation about sounds and they are particularly exposed to the connections between letters and sounds, which makes the brain sensitive to this. To make the learning effect even stronger, KlankKr8 uses advanced techniques to visualize the characteristics of sounds. For example, when presented with sounds, children see animations of the pronunciation (the mouth movements) and letters have an aura that matches the type of sound. For example, at the /g/ a strong vibration can be seen, at the /v/ a slight vibration, at the /f/ an airflow without vibration and at the /p/ a thud. In addition, a writing component has also been added so that children can actively practice the shape of the letters.

Other important features of KlankKr8 at school are:

- Through LeerKr8, an online portal, you can keep track of exactly how much your student plays and which sounds still require effort. You will also receive specific recommendations based on the playing behavior of the student.

- Students are guided through the game by a talking astronaut and can therefore play it independently.

- Students experience KlankKr8 more as a game than as an educational tool and are therefore really motivated to play a lot.

- The content of the game constantly adapts to the specific difficulties the child experiences. If the student has difficulty with the /eu/ and the /ui/, those sounds are particularly common.

- Students can also play the game at home from the school account. The progress will then also be saved in the LeerKr8 portal.

The game is the result of ten years of scientific research into letter learning, reading, implicit learning and the use of games and the effectiveness of the game concept has been scientifically proven.

KlankKr8 is the result of a unique collaboration between the University of Amsterdam, the TU Delft Gamelab, Game Tailors and the RID.
