Muhammad Nawawi ibn Umar ibn Arbi al-Bantani al-Jawi. Born in 1230 H-1813 AD in Tanara Serang Banten. Among his family he was known by the name Abu Abd al-Mu'thi. His father, KH. „Umar ibn Arbi, was one of the leading scholars in the Tanara area.

In terms of lineage, Shaikh Nawawi is the 12th descendant of Maulana Syarif Hidayatullah, or better known as Sunan Gunung Jati, Cirebon.

Thus, from his father's lineage, Shaikh Nawawi comes from the descendants of the Prophet. Meanwhile, his mother's name was Zubaidah, from the lineage of Muhammad Singaraja. Shaykh Nawawi is the first of seven siblings. His six siblings are Ahmad Syihabuddin, Tamim, Sa'id, Abdullah, Tsaqilah and Sariyah.
