This application contains the complete translation of the book Pararaton Ken Arok Raja Singosari
Serat Pararaton, or Pararaton only (Kawi: "Book of Kings"), is a Middle Javanese Literature manuscript that was composed in the Javanese language Kawi. This manuscript is quite short, in the form of 32 pages the size of a folio consisting of 1126 lines. It contained the history of the Singhasari and Majapahit kings in East Java. This book is also known by the name "King's Library", which in Sanskrit also means "book of kings". There are no records showing the author of Pararaton.
Pararaton begins with a story about the incarnation of Ken Arok, the founding figure of the Singhasari kingdom (1222-1292). [1] [2] Furthermore, almost half the book discusses how Ken Arok lived his life journey, until he became king in 1222. The descriptions in this manuscript tend to be mythological. The story then continues with short narrative passages, arranged in chronological order. Many events recorded here are given dates. Near the end, the explanation of history is getting shorter and mixed with information about the genealogies of various members of the Majapahit royal family.
The emphasis on the importance of Ken Arok's story is not only expressed through the length of the story, but also through the alternative titles offered in this text, namely: "Pararaton Fiber or Katuturanira Ken Angrok", or "The Book of Kings or Stories About Ken Arok". Considering the oldest date found on the manuscript pages is 1522 Saka (or 1600 AD), it is estimated that the last part of the manuscript was written between 1481 and 1600, which is likely closer to the first year than the second year.
The Pararaton begins with a brief introduction on how Ken Arok prepared his own incarnation so that he could become a king. [1] It is said that Ken Arok made himself a sacrifice (Sanskrit: yadnya) for Yamadipati, the god who guarded the gates of hell, to obtain salvation from death. In return, Ken Arok was blessed to be reborn as king Singhasari, and at the time of his death he would enter Vishnu's paradise.
The promise was then fulfilled. Ken Arok was born by Brahma through a newly married village woman. His mother placed him on a grave when he had just given birth; and Ken Arok's body that radiates light attracts the attention of Ki Lembong, a thief who just happened to pass by. Ki Lembong took him as a child and raised him, and taught him all his skills. Ken Arok then became involved in gambling, robbery and rape. The text states that Ken Arok was repeatedly saved from difficulties through divine intervention. It was mentioned an incident on Mount Kryar Lejar, where the gods came down and Batara Guru stated that Ken Arok was his son, and it was determined to bring stability and power to Java.
The Pararaton introduction then continues with the story of Ken Arok's meeting with Lohgawe, a Brahmin who came from India to ensure that the Batara Guru's order could be carried out. Lohgawe then suggested that Ken Arok meet Tunggul Ametung, the ruler of Tumapel. After serving for a while, Ken Arok killed Tunggul Ametung to get his wife, Ken Dedes; as well as the throne of Singhasari kingdom.
