1.1 About Amref Health Africa

Amref Health Africa is Africa’s leading health development non-governmental organisation founded in 1957 as the Flying Doctors Service of East Africa. It has over 57 years’ experience working with the most marginalised and vulnerable communities across sub Saharan Africa to create lasting health change. Amref Health Africa wants to see communities with the knowledge, skills and means to maintain good health and break the cycle of poor health and poverty because it believes that the power for lasting health transformation lies within African communities.

Amref Health Africa is based in Africa with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya and offices across Africa, Europe, the United States of America, and Canada. Amref Health Africa started work to provide remote communities with health care, and has over the years utilise the available resources to bridge the gap between health systems and the communities they serve. Today, Amref Health Africa is using eLearning, telemedicine and mHealth to spread health knowledge and support health care. Our work has won high profile international awards such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Award for Global Health and the Conrad Hilton Humanitarian Award.

1.2 About the Jibu project

The JIBU mLearning project, made possible by the Dutch Postcode Lottery, is an upshot of the Kenya eLearning nurse upgrading programme implemented by Amref Health Africa, Accenture, the Nursing Council of Kenya and the Ministry of Health since 2005. The JIBU Project tests and implements mobile technologies for use by nurses and midwives in increasing access to health information and ultimately improving service delivery.

The project’s objectives are:

1. To increase access to the eLearning content for nurses/midwives

2. To provide nurses and midwives with access to additional reference materials to support learning

3. To provide nurses and midwives with access to additional reference materials to support practice

4. To increase opportunities for peer learning for geographically dispersed nurses/midwives
