Professional Java and databases course of the University of Hagen

The Java programming language is through integrated programming interfaces suited for working with databases. In this course, the main Java application development technologies for databases (such as Oracle, MySQL and MS Access) are presented. In addition to JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) in combination with the SQL language of the course deals with the technologies JavaBeans, SQLJ (embedded SQL) and JDO (Java Data Objects).

The aim of the course is to gain a solid understanding of the Java-based work with databases. There are comprehensive programming examples and instructions.

In Chapter 1 of the course first, basic terms are explained and the Eclipse development environment. Then, a first small sample application is developed. Learn how to connect to a MS Access database can be implemented with JDBC.

Chapter 2 deals with basic techniques of relational databases and the query language SQL (Structured Query Language).

Chapter 3 deepens the knowledge of JDBC architecture. The JDBC driver classes together with four different bridge between Java and databases. As a practical example, a MySQL database is used.

Chapter 4 is dedicated to the database management system Oracle. It draws both on the specific capabilities of Oracle, such as triggers and stored procedures, as well as advanced JDBC programming techniques such as transactions.

Chapter 5 deals with the JavaBeans technology, which ensures the database access through methods. JDBC and SQL knowledge is no longer necessary.

In Chapter 6 is presented with SQLJ (embedded SQL) another alternative to JDBC. Unlike JDBC SQLJ is not a dynamic but a static language.

The final chapter 7, the object-oriented data storage with JDO (Java Data Objects) on the subject. At the end of this chapter all treated technologies for database access in Java applications are again compared.
