About Jacob Olie: Amsterdam

Swipe through 19th century Amsterdam as seen by Jacob Olie's camera.

Jacob Olie (1834-1905) photographed Amsterdam at the end of the 19th century. He recorded the development of the sleepy town into a modern city, with its buzzing activity, railroads and shipping.

Olie took his first pictures in the 1860's. Amsterdam at the time had hardly changed since the 17th century boom. It wasn't until 1870 that it finally picked up speed and started growing again, building new neighborhoods outside the old city walls. Olie recorded the changes.

His extraordinary pictures - Olie was an architectural draftsman with an eye for composition and perspective - give us a spectacular view of the city in his days.
