He is the direct generation after the Ar-Rofi'i and An-Nawawi generations. Ar-Rofi'i died in 623 H, while An-Nawawi died in 676 H. Ibnu An-Naqib was born in 702 H in Cairo, died in 769 H in Cairo, Egypt. He is of European descent because his father was a Christian from Antioch. An-Naqib is a military title equivalent to a captain that his father had after being freed by his master. So, he was called Ibn An-Naqib because he was attributed to his father's laqob. Apart from the book "Umdatu As-Salik", he also wrote a syarah for An-Nawawi's "Minhaju At-Tholibin" entitled "As-Siroj 'Fi Nukati Al-Minhaj".

This book is one of the books that discusses how a servant should worship from a fiqh perspective. This book is included in the category of tasawwuf fiqh books which combine the guidance of worship along with the law of fiqh.

The way a servant interacts with his God is through worship. Worship is something that is loved by Allah if we do it, whether it is obligatory, sunnah or permissible such as prayer, fasting and others. We can do some acts of worship, such as shodaqoh, anytime and anywhere, but other acts of worship, such as mandatory worship, have procedures that must be understood. Among the efforts that must be made is studying the work of Salaf scholars who study this matter.

As the title of the book Umdatus Salik wa Uddatun Nasik (the foundation and equipment of a servant's worship on the way to Allah), as a whole, this book discusses guidance in worship which is presented in the form of fiqh. The book is written in very detail and clearly, especially in the breadth of its fiqh, the book also contains ikhtilaf, supporting arguments and so on. This book is an independent book (not a sharah or mukhtashor) which is classified in the middle category, not too thin and not too thick. Even though it is not in the category of a large book, this book covers all the important discussions in the Shafi'i school of thought.
