Ronin is the name given to the masterless samurai who lived in the period between 1185 and 1868, which is called the Age of Samurai in Japan. Samurai can only become Ronin if their master dies or their privileges are destroyed.

Ronin combines the Japanese word rō-nin, which means 'wave man. It means "wandering" or "nomadic man" to express that the samurai is homeless. The term ronin was first used during the Nara and Heian periods to describe samurai who fled or were exiled from their master's lands. Later, "Ronin" became a common phrase for all masterless samurai.

If a samurai who has lost his master does not perform this ritual, that person is called a Ronin to live with this shame. The Ronin began to be used at the request of the traditional samurai and the Japanese ruler.

Ronins are similar in armor and weapons, as they are ancient samurai. Usually, they carry two swords. However, it has also been observed that they did not have any masters, and in some cases, they were left without money, carrying two staffs of an average sword size and slightly smaller. However, according to their abilities, Ronins can also have bows and arrows.

While Ronins were not seen in large numbers until the 17th century, their numbers started to increase with the beginning of the separation in the Edo period between 1603-1868 in Japan. As a result, many samurai left their masters and became Ronin.

Although the Ronin, who had no source of income, were bodyguards as mercenaries at the beginning of this period, many tried to earn money illegally over the years.
