Samurai were warriors who appeared in Japan's premodern history, who developed into military class leaders during the Edo Period (1603-1867). The origins of the samurai began in the Heian Period around the late 8th and early 9th centuries, to subjugate the native Emishi people of the Tohoku region. In 781-806 AD during the reign of Emperor Kanmu the title of shogun was introduced, which relied on warriors from powerful regional clans to conquer Emishi. Since then, the powerful clan has grown beyond the traditional aristocracy. Under the Shogunate, the samurai became a symbol of the warrior and ideal citizen, ruling Japan for the next 700 years. It wasn't until the Edo Period that the importance of martial skills declined, and many samurai switched professions, such as teachers, artists, or bureaucrats. Japan's feudal period ended in 1868 and the samurai class was abolished a few years later.
