The GeoSolutions team has worked with clients on integrating its geospatial open source products into new and existing enterprise infrastructures and lately this has involved many times trying to move part of this information to mobile devices for field work related to the management of infrastructures or monitoring of certain events like illegal waste sites or landslides. We noticed that the available solutions for doing this work were either too expensive or not able at all to cope with the amount and complexity of the data we needed to put in the ends of the surveyors, hence we found ourselves reinventing the wheel multiple times. However, the Open Source tools to build a comprehensive solution to solve this problem are there, they are only need to be customized and integrated, the number of use cases that we could cover with a proper solution given away at the right cost is tremendous.

It is said “80% of all data contains some reference to geography” well, if this is true (and nobody denied that), then we should try and allow users to collect this information as closely as possible from the source on the field rather than from the office. GeoCollect aims to enable users to manage the lifecycle of assets spread over a region of interest which requires periodic surveys in order to update their status through an integrated infrastructure for data collection and management with a strong focus on the ability to work offline in the field with mobile devices. With GeoCollect we intend to integrate, automate and control the management as well as field collection process bringing the gap between standard legacy asset management systems and mobile devices for use cases. We also envision as a natural evolution of our solution the ability to incorporate near real time streams of data coming from sensor deployed on the field which would complement the data acquired from the surveyors allow decision makers to base their decision on timely and comprehensive information.
