Cybersecurity Workforce Framework app is based on the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Workforce Framework which was developed "to provide educators, students, employers, employees, training providers and policy makers with a systematic way for organizing the way we think about cybersecurity work, and what is required for the cybersecurity workforce."

This framework breaks cybersecurity work into 7 categories that have a total of over 30 special areas. These special areas have certain job titles, knowledge, skills, abilities (KSA) and tasks that are typically associated with them.

DoD Directive 8140, Cyberspace Workforce Management Policy (replacing 8570) supports the NICE framework initiative which is critical to choosing the qualified personnel for cybersecurity jobs.
