The novel "American tragedy" by Dreiser begins with a description of a strange family, husband and wife, and also 4 of their children preaching the word of the Lord in the streets of the American city.

Fanatically believing father and mother raise children in cramped conditions, giving them for the most part only moral education.

It was alien to the children, most of all to the active boy Clyde, who wanted a completely different life for himself than the one that his father and mother offered.

Over the years, Clyde has just established himself in his intention to live differently and at the age of 16 begins his life by settling in as an assistant to the seller of soda water in a pharmacy and then a messenger to a posh hotel.

This dramatically changed Clyde's views on life and gradually, but radically changed his ideas about life and about what to strive for.

Starting to earn his first money, he begins to spend it on himself: on clothes and entertainment; deceives parents, hiding their income and their way of life from them.

At the same time, Clyde's eldest sister escapes from the parents' house with the man, who after a while was left to them without funds and on demolitions.

Clyde is very sorry for his sister, but he more and more goes into the abyss of entertainment, starting to take care of a girl who uses it to raise her own status and to receive gifts.

In one of the joint skating on the car is the American tragedy and the car on which Clyde was driving with friends, knocks down the child.

Despite the fact that Clyde was not behind the wheel, he runs away, cutting off all ties with his family at a very difficult time for them.

After several years of wandering, want and life under a false name, Clyde settles in a club in which, by coincidence, his rich uncle stops, who offers Clyde a low position at the collar factory owned by him. In the hope that he will manage to get into people, Clyde moves to the small town of Lycurgus, where he begins to work at the lowest and most difficult position as a regular worker. Despite the fact that his uncle took part in the fate of his nephew, his family went to Clyde unhappy, occasionally inviting him to their lunches, not introducing his circle of acquaintances.
