Qur'an: The Word of God

The Quran, the holy book of Islam, begins with a short surah (chapter) called the Fātihah, [The Opening]:

In the Name of God,

The Merciful, the Compassionate.

Praise belongs to God, Lord of the Worlds,

The Merciful, the Compassionate,

Master of the Day of Judgment.

It is You we worship; it is You we ask for help.

Guide us on the Straight Path: the Path of those You have blessed,

Those who incur no anger and who have not gone astray.

Bismillāh-ir-rāḥmān-ir-rahīm

Al-ḥamdu li-llāh-i rabb-il-‘ālamīn

Ar-raḥmān-ir-raḥīm

Mālik-i yawm-id-dīn

Iyyāka na‘budu wa iyyāka nasta‘īn

Ihdinā-ṣ-ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm

Ṣirāṭ alladhīna an‘amta ‘alayhim

Ghayr il-maghḍūb-i ‘alayhim

Wa lā-dh-dhāllīn

Many Muslims recite the Fātiḥah as part of their prayers every day. According to a saying attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, this surah contains the essence of the teachings of the Quran. The word for God in Arabic is “Allah,” which is the same word used by Arabic-speaking Christians to refer to God. Most Muslims understand God to be the Creator and Ruler of the entire universe, the ultimate Judge of all human beings, and to be characterized above all by the qualities of compassion and mercy. God also guides humanity to the path of righteousness through messengers and prophets. According to the Quran, “There is a Messenger for every community” (Quran, 10:47), and legend has is that there have been 124,000 prophets sent to humanity. Some of these have received revelation in the form of a scripture: to David (Dāwūd) was revealed the Zabūr or Psalms; to Moses [Mūsā] was revealed the Tawrāh or Torah, Jesus [‘Isā] received the Injīl or Gospel, and Muhammad received the Quran. For this reason, Muslims refer to Christians and Jews as “People of the Book,” for they received a message that was fundamentally the same as that of the Quran. In certain geographic and cultural contexts some Muslims have also included Zoroastrians and Hindus in this category as they consider them to have also received revelation in the form of scripture. The adhan (Arabic: أَذَان‎ [ʔaˈðaːn]), also written as adhaan, azan, azaan, or athan, also called ezan in Turkish, is the Islamic call to prayer, recited by the muezzin at prescribed times of the day. The root of the word is ʾadhina أَذِنَ meaning "to listen, to hear, be informed about". Another derivative of this word is ʾudhun (أُذُن), meaning "ear".

Adhan is called out by a muezzin from the mosque five times a day, a whole day long in the event of religious holidays (i.e. Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha), traditionally from the minaret, summoning Muslims for obligatory (fard) prayer (salat). A second call, known as the iqamah then summons Muslims to line up for the beginning of the prayers.

The Adhan recites out loud the Takbir (Allah is greater) followed by the Shahada (There is no divine being except Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of Allah). This statement of faith, called the Kalimah, is the first of the Five Pillars of Islam.
