The name Imam Malik is of course phenomenal as a fiqh scholar and a founding figure of the Maliki school of thought. However, not only as a fiqh scholar, Imam Malik is also known as a hadith scholar who is famous for one of his hadith works entitled al-Muwwatha'.

Of the many famous hadith scholars, Imam Malik is the most different from the process of his knowledge tour. If other hadith scholars explored various countries, Imam Malik only focused on his homeland to deepen his knowledge. Because of this, he was nicknamed Imam Dar al-Hijrah.

Biography of Imam Malik bin Anas

He is a hadith scholar who was born in 93 H and has the full name Abu Abdillah Malik bin Anas bin Malik bin Abi Amir bin Amr bin al-Haris bin Ghaiman bin Kutsail bin Amr bin al-Haris Dzi Ashbah. Actually, there are several opinions regarding the birth of Imam Malik. Some say 94 H, 95 H and even 90 H, but the strongest opinion is 93 H based on the history of Imam Yahya bin Bakir that he heard Imam Malik say, "I was born in 93 H".

The village of Dhi al-Marwah, Medina witnessed the birth of Imam Malik from a woman named Aliyah bint Syarik al-Azdiyah. His father, Anas bin Malik, was an independent man of Yemen origin. Imam Malik was blessed with three sons, named Yahya, Muhammad, Fatih and one daughter named Fatima.

During his life, Imam Malik was arrested and tortured because of his fatwa regarding forced bai'at. He has a fatwa that such bai'at is invalid. Then his fatwa became a strong support for the Shiites to oppose the Abbasid rule. According to the Shiites, that the bai'at of Caliph al-Mansur from the Caliph Bani Abbas was forced.

Imam Malik died in 179 H / 798 AD in Medina after falling ill for about 20 days. Buried in al-Baqi and the funeral was attended by Caliph Harun al-Rashid who at that time was performing the pilgrimage in Mecca.

One of Imam Malik's phenomenal works, namely, Kitab al-Muwaththa' which means 'guide'. This book compiles selected hadiths based on fiqh classification. One of the reasons for this book is due to the insistence of Caliph Mansur who asked Imam Malik to collect hadiths and make them into a book.
