A DAY OF FISHING MINUTIAE

MY dad taught me how to fish during my early years, he put a rod in my hand as soon as I could balance in a pair of shoes. I still remember the day of fishing with my Dad. When I was eight years old I went on a fishing trip with my dad along with fishing equipment. The ride was terrible, but when we got there it was worth it. On the way there we decided to make bets. There was the biggest fish and most unique catch and the winner gets special prizes.

All the beauty of nature is collected in one moment. I can still feel the sponginess of the winter-aged leaves under my feet. I felt as though I was walking on a cloud, the softness of the leaves cushioning my every step, they were guiding me along the wooded path to a small creek. The humming of the water moved with the crispness of the air, together they were singing a promise of a fresh and clean new season. It was a beautiful spring that year. Every so often a day like that comes back and I am reminded of posing for our picture together.

I can still feel his pride penetrating my skin, his gentle voice of instruction on how to correctly cast my rod. That same voice is now echoing in my head as I remember the photo. I was willing for him to teach me everything. That day I felt as though he would always be there for me.

When I caught that fish we both couldn’t have been more proud. Sunbeams of joy felt like they were shooting out of our bodies. His proud laughter was embedded in my head forever. The fish was the size of a shark to me, but in all actuality, it was a sunfish, no bigger than the size of an average fist. Its shimmering scales were dancing off the reflecting water. I was meeting his expectation and it made me more excited than when I caught the fish. I was the sparkle in his eye.

He also caught some bigger and smaller fish. Then we shared the food, snacks and beverages in the stream itself. Finally, with a broad smile, we reached our home with fishes which we caught. We captured that moment with my mom as a day of celebration in my life.
