The prehistory of the Philippines is believed to have begun with the arrival of the first humans using rafts or boats at least 67,000 years ago as the 2007 discovery of Callao Man suggested. Negrito tribes first inhabited the isles. Groups of Austronesians later migrated to the islands.

Eventually various groups developed, separated into hunter-gatherer tribes, warrior societies, petty plutocracies and maritime-oriented harbor principalities which eventually grew into kingdoms, rajahnates, kedatuans, huangdoms and sultanates. These small nations were either greatly influenced by the Indian Hindu religion, language, culture, literature and philosophy from India through many campaigns from India including South-East Asia campaign of Rajendra Chola I, Islam from Arabia or were Sinified tributary states allied to China. The nations included the Indianized Rajahnates of Butuan and Cebu, the dynasty of Tondo, the august kingdoms of Maysapan and Maynila, the Kedatuan of Madja-as, the sinified Huangdom of Ma-i, the Huangdom of Pangasinan as well as the Muslim Sultanates of Sulu, Lanao and Maguindanao. These small maritime states flourished from the 1st millennium.These kingdoms traded with what are now called China, India, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia.The remainder of the settlements were independent barangays allied with one of the larger states.

Nagsimula ang kasaysayan ng Pilipinas nang dumating ang mga sinaunang tao sa Pilipinas sa pamamagitan ng mga tulay na lupa 30,000 taon na ang nakalilipas. Ang unang tala na pagbisita na mula sa Kanluran ay ang pagdating ni Ferdinand Magellan sa pulo ng Homonhon, sa timog-silangan ng Samar noong 16 Marso 1521. Nagtayo ng mga permanenteng paninirahan sa Cebu kasabay ng ekspedisyon ni Miguel López de Legazpi noong 1565, at marami pang mga paninirahan ang itinatag pa-Hilaga hanggang sa maabot ng mga kolonyalista ang Look ng Maynila sa pulo ng Luzon. Nagtatag ng isang syudad sa Maynila at dito nagsimula ang panahon ng kolonyalisasyon ng Espanya na nagtagal ng tatlong siglo.

Nagsimula ang rebolusyon laban sa Espanya noong Abril ng 1896, na pagkaraan ng dalawang taon ay humantong sa proklamasyon ng kalayaan at ang pagtatatag ng Unang Republika ng Pilipinas. Ngunit ang Kasunduan sa Paris, na naganap sa katapusan ng Digmaang Espanyol-Amerikano, ay naglipat ng pamamahala sa Pilipinas sa Estados Unidos. Nagsimula ang kolonyal na pamamahala ng Estados Unidos sa Pilipinas noong Disyembre ng 1899, kasama ang limitadong lokal na pamamahala noong 1905. Ang parsiyal na pagsasarili ay iginawad noong 1935, bilang paghahanda sa isang ganap ng kalayaan mula sa Estados Unidos noong 1945.
