What is hepatitis?

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can be due to various causes, although it is usually a virus that is responsible for the condition. Among the consequences of liver malfunction are: Decreased bile production, deficient protein production, Hypoglycemia, deficiencies in metabolism and decreased ability to defend the body against bacteria and viruses, due to malfunction of certain liver cells.

Types of Hepatitis

Hepatitis A

Also called infectious hepatitis; this variant is produced by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). Its transmission occurs when consuming water or foods contaminated by fecal matter containing the virus, and also by contagion from person to person, especially if the hygienic conditions are deficient.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B or serum hepatitis; is produced by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Infection occurs through infected body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal secretions, saliva, tears, and urine.

Hepatitis C

Caused by the hepatitis C virus, it is transmitted by direct contact with the blood of an infected person. Like hepatitis B, the C form of this disease has an acute course and a chronic course, the latter being the one that usually develops more frequently.

Hepatitis D

It is the most serious form of viral hepatitis. Hepatitis D virus (HDV), also called delta hepatitis, is transmitted through the same pathways as the hepatitis B virus. It is a very special virus because it requires the existence of a hepatitis B virus to survive in the human being. Therefore, when someone is infected with HDV, they are also absolutely infected with HBV. This is because the outer sheath of the VHD is made up of part of the HBV. It is estimated that 5% of patients with hepatitis B are coinfected with the hepatitis D virus.
