The city of Bujalance is located in the east of the province of Cordoba, on the N-324 and 11 km from the highway, being at a total distance of 42km from Córdoba, at an altitude of 304 meters above sea level, a surface of 125.3 km2 in its municipal area and a total of 7,832 inhabitants.

The historical prominence of Bujalance is due, mainly, to its location and the richness of its soil, serving as an example of its magnificent location, the fact that the Roman road that linked Córdoba with the region of Cástulo, passed through this town.

In the Roman period, the lands of Bujalance, like many others near the Guadalquivir, would be affected by the phenomenon of rural settlement, which manifested itself in the proliferation of villas, largely conditioned by the fertility of the lands. riparian, and the ease of communication that the river represented.

During the Muslim era, the Bury al-Hansh castle (Serpent Tower) was built as a watchtower of the approaches to the city of Córdoba. Already in the 13th century its name appears as "Bu-rialhanc" or "Burjalhance" from which the place name of Bujalance comes.

From the second half of the 15th century, it will acquire a certain importance coinciding with a demographic increase, so that it will be the royal town, after Córdoba, with the largest population.

In the year 1594, at the end of the reign of Philip II, Bujalance managed to definitively separate itself from the jurisdiction of Córdoba by Royal Decree of June 8, 1594. Later, Philip IV granted, by a privilege issued on March 6, 1630 , the title of City in exchange for 80,000 ducats. In 1638, this same monarch granted the celebration of an annual fair, from August 26 to September 12; It also enjoyed a weekly market on Saturdays.

Of the last two centuries of its history, its participation in the War of Independence stands out, during the period of French occupation, the abuses of bands of bandits in the 1st half of the 19th century, given its privileged location near the Camino Real to Madrid. ; and finally, in the 20th century we highlight the great organizational capacity of the peasant movement, imbued with anarcho-syndicalist ideas during the period of the Second Republic.
